With around 150 students, the Sixth Form at John Lyon is a community. Boys are assigned a small tutor group with an average size of 9, with a form tutor who will guide boys through their two years in Sixth Form, giving them personal advice, support and guidance on their next steps in life. It is this tailored support that makes the Sixth Form here special.

Boys start 4 AS-Levels and will usually take 3 to A-Level after sitting AS exams in the summer of the Lower Sixth. Many boys will also complete an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), which they begin in the Summer Term of the Lower Sixth. Results at A-Level are strong, with 73% of grades being A*-B and 45% A*-A. In the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) 100% of boys have achieved A*-A for three years in a row. Average class sizes in the Sixth Form are 7 and with the excellent academic preparation your son is in safe hands. Many of our Sixth Form teachers are examiners with some being published in their subject area.

As the Sixth Form is part of an 11-18 school, boys in the Sixth Form have an opportunity to take on leadership roles within the school, whether this is by leading an academic society, captaining a sports team, performing in a concert, taking a leading role in the school play, mentoring a younger boy, or by joining the prefect team.  Sixth Form boys also lead the School’s charity efforts and there is an opportunity to join the Sixth Form volunteering programme on a Wednesday afternoon. Sixth Form at John Lyon is about developing leadership.

Sixth form pupils regularly achieve places at their first choice universities, often on demanding courses.ISI Inspection Report 2010

When boys enter the Sixth Form they settle in very quickly. On their first day boys can expect an induction into Sixth Form life and parents will have an opportunity to come into school to meet their son’s form tutor, the pastoral team, and the Head of Sixth Form. Within their first week in the Sixth Form boys will take part in the Sixth Form Induction Weekend, where they will develop teamwork, leadership and interpersonal skills, all of which are key to success in the Sixth Form. This is an excellent way of helping your son settle into the school;creating new friendship groups and strengthening the Sixth Form community.

In theUpper Sixth the vast majority of boys apply for university, with the majority going on to study at prestigious Russell Group universities. With a dedicated UCAS team, individual supervisors for Oxbridge candidates, tailored support for Medical and Dental applications, and individual guidance from tutors and Sixth Form staff, your son will be well advised in making his next steps in life.

I hope you will take the time to get in touch with our admissions department about sending your son to the Sixth Form at John Lyon.

Mr James Armstrong
