Cricket

Cricket is our major sport in the Summer Term, and with the luxury of three squares at Sudbury Fields we typically have more than ten teams and over 100 fixtures every summer.

Of course, the weather is not always kind for cricket, so indoor nets in the sports hall at the main school site enable regular practice all year round. Teams begin training under the guidance of our Cricket Professional in September which runs alongside an Elite Player Pathway, made up of our strongest junior pupils from years 7-10. Year 11 have the opportunity to train as part of their PE option and Senior players receive small group sessions during free periods.

The School regularly competes in the Middlesex Cup and we are rightly proud of our strong heritage and excellent cricketers. We have a number of pupils in both the Borough and County pathways whilst providing opportunities for A-C teams in Years 7-10.

There is a separate girls cricket programme that runs across the whole year, who also compete in both midweek and weekend fixtures.

The School introduced a Cricket Week in 2013, which provides opportunities for the 1st XI to play the longer format of the game against men’s teams, including an MCC fixture. A number of fixtures for all age groups take part during the week and we regularly host touring teams from around the world.

Our season culminates with a Festival of Sport, where we showcase our strongest cricketers alongside staff and Old Lyonians. Alongside this, pupils challenge a member of their family in some light hearted competitive cricket.

In the Summer of 2024, our major sports tour resumed to Barbados whilst our junior squad enjoyed a pre-season tour of the Isle of Wight and our Girls to Hampshire.

For the past three years, John Lyon have been included in the Top 100 Independent Schools across the Country.
