Bird-themed session at Forest School

The Big Garden Birdwatch takes place from 24 to 26 January, and this week, Reception and Year 2 pupils enjoyed a bird-themed session at Forest School. It was a great way for the children to learn about this event, the UK’s largest citizen science wildlife survey, where people across the country help track garden bird populations.

During the session, the children discovered what bird nests look like and what food birds eat in the UK. They also worked together to create a large bird’s nest. Some children chose to help the birds this winter by making wire bird feeders, threading small pieces of cheese and apple onto wire and forming them into a circle, while others used clay to create their own birds.

Our Forest School site at Sudbury Fields was the perfect place to mark the Big Garden Birdwatch, with plenty of birds to spot and identify. It was a great opportunity for the children to learn about birds and their role in the natural world.
