Football

Football – the people’s game – is our major sport in the Autumn Term, played by pupils of all ages.

At John Lyon, there is a real passion for football, with specialist staff (up to, and including UEFA A level coaches) developing players across all age groups and of all standards, ranging from those who enjoy competitive football fixtures in the school’s A-D teams, to those who want to play for fun within internal school competitions. The School are proud that a number of our alumni have also gone on to play professionally within the Premier League, UEFA Europa League, EFL Football Leagues, and the National Football League competitions.

The standard of facilities at our Sudbury Fields grounds is exceptional, with seven football pitches, the quality of which allows a collaborative passing style of football that fits with our player-centred approach to the game. A state-of-the-art all-weather pitch also enables a high number of after-school training sessions in the Spring Term.

In addition to the traditional Saturday block fixtures and inclusive football weeks, we are proud to also stretch and challenge our top players by competing in the Independent Schools Football Association (ISFA) national competitions, as well as competing in local competitions against rival schools. Recent successes have include our U15 Boys reaching the Semi-Final of the ISFA trophy (2024); our 1st XI reaching the ISFA Shield Quarter-Final (2024); our U13 Girls finishing top of the Harrow Schools Football League and our U13 Boys securing victory in the U13 Harrow Schools Cup.
